Goals Galore. Again Fulham 6-2 Peterborough United

Premier League quality Christian Yelich Jersey shone through as Fulham smashed 6 past Posh to get through to the 4th round of the F.A Cup.Fulham started with a very strong side despite Mark Hughes suggesting in his programme notes that he may have utilised some of the back-up players available to him. Young goalkeeper David Stockdale was chosen to play in goal, replacing Mark Schwarzer who is away on International duty. Diomansy Kamara was selected to start up-front ahead of American international, Eddie Johnson.Gary Johnson sent out an un-changed side from their last league fixture against Walsall. Lee Tomlin continued to be selected as a striker, although he did drop deep at times, ahead of new loan recruits Kieran Agard and Jonathon Obika who both had a relatively small amount of time to settle into their Posh careers since signing on loan during the week. The Posh may have been the underdogs heading into the game but Johnsons attack minded strategy was not going to be changed. The visitors flew out of the blocks, committing a number of men forward, and managed to create some good early pre sure because of it. Indeed, in the first five minutes Posh had a succe sion of corners 5 in total and both Arron Davies and Craig Mackail-Smith produced goods saves from Stockdale in the Fulham goal. The early pre sure had acted as a warning sign to the Premier League side that this fixture may not be quite as easy as they were expecting it to be; Peterborough certainly were not going to try to defend their way to a replay. As a result Fulham reacted through Simon Davies, who had received a good ovation from the Posh crowd of over 4,500, when he cut inside and fired a curling effort just wide of the far corner of Lewis goal after being allowed too much time on the edge of the box.It was Posh who would create the next chance though as the home side began to settle after being stunned by Peterboroughs early enthusiasm. Craig Mackail-Smith and Lee Tomlin worked well together and it was the former who nearly opened the scoring but his shot went just wide of the mark. After an early period of dominance Posh were on the back-foot as Fulham began to show their quality. Some intricate pa sing moves, led by the composed Danny Murphy, were making the Posh defenders panic and Tommy Rowe was looking increasingly nervous after Damien Duff had managed to get behind him far too easily on a number of occasions in the early stages. As the visitors struggled defensively they were allowing Fulham players too much time on the edge of the area, seemingly more intent on marking the Fulham players attackingruns, and The Cottagers almost capitalised with both Simon Davies and Clint Dempsey putting the ball inches wide, from just outside the 18-yard box, in quick succe sion.Fulham opened the scoring just past the half-hour mark when an intricate run from Damien Duff drew Rowe out of position it allowed Chris Baird too much space to put a cro s into the Peterborough area and DIAMANSY KAMARA was found un-marked at the far post to head the ball past a despairing Lewis who had no chance. The build-up to the Fulham goal was excellent but Posh still should have done better defensively. For the visitors it now became a question of getting in at half-time without conceding another goal to make sure they were still in the match after the interval. It seemed that any hope that Peterborough had of pulling of an unlikely cup upset was to be ended by Damien Duff, who again found it too easy to round Tommy Rowe, who managed to create a great opportunity but the highly-rated winger stroked his effort wide of Lewis far post after having time to place his shot wherever he wanted to.Just as it seemed Posh, who were now under a lot of pre sure, would hang on until half time ended hopes of victory were ended when DICKSON ETUHU fired the hosts into a 2-0 lead. Again Duff was allowed too much time by Rowe, who was having a nightmare first half, to pick out the onrushing central midfielder who made no mistake, smashing the ball in past Joe Lewis.Posh fans had seen their team crash out at this stage last season with a heavy defeat to London opponents, Tottenham, where The Posh had rarely tried to break out of their own half. This was different though, although the scoreline left the away support worrying about another hammering, Posh were throwing men forward and the lead rather flattered Fulham who had edged a closely fought affair after 45 minutes. Certainly, the away side had had their chances but unfortunately they hadnt been able to dispatch with them.Johnson knew that it would take a remarkable comeback to see his side even make a replay but he wasnt about to give up just yet. An attacking change was made at half-time with Chris Whelpdale coming off to be replaced by Mendez-Laing, a very attack minded right winger. Fulham also made a substitution with Simon Davies coming off in a straight switch with Zoltan Gera. The first half almost started in dramatic fashion. Clearly fired up be a dre sing room, motivational, speech from Johnson the Posh swarmed forward from kick-off and after Mackail-Smith was slotted through by Grant McCann it was a great chance for the away side to reduce the deficit, especially as Arron Davies was charging forward ready to tap the ball into an empty net, however Mackail-Smith chose to shoot from a tight angle and the ball rolled just wide of Stockdales far post. The vociferous away support were encouraged by the early momentum that their side were managing to gain and again the visitors came close to getting on the score-sheet. This time the chance fell from a corner that was whipped in from Grant McCann and fumbled by Stockdale but Mackail-Smiths goal bound header was cleared away in acrobatic style by John Pantsil. As Posh committed more and more men forward in search of an elusive goal they were becoming increasingly vulnerable to counter attacks, especially as the defence was holding such a high line, and Fulham almost capitalised twice because of it. First Zoltan Geras shot was parried away by Lewis, expertly, and then Damien Duff was played through but his shot hit the inside of the post before trickling along the goal mouth and agonisingly wide.Posh needed to attack more if they were to stand any chance of forcing an unlikely comeback and, as a result, Johnson chose to bring on Jonathan Obika to make his debut up-front. The new loan signing from Tottenham replaced Arron Davies, who had been quiet before his withdrawal, and Tomlin was quickly moved to right midfield with Mendez-Laing switching to the left flank as a consequence of the strikers introduction. The game was well and truly ended as a contest just before the hour mark when DIOMANSY KAMARA was played through by Danny Murphy and the striker dispatched with the chance in clinical fashion. Mark Little was largely at fault seemingly giving the attacker acres of space to run into due to some poor marking and then not getting back quick enough to put some pre sure on the finish.Mark Hughes knew now that this was job done and quickly began to rest his key players. Clint Dempsey was withdrawn moments after the third goal and Jonathon Greening was given half an hour to impre s the home management and support. And Corey Knebel Jersey shortly after his introduction into the match he was in the thick of the action, cro sing the ball to set up ZOLTAN GERA who headed the ball in at the far post.4-0 was a particularly harsh scoreline on the away side who had more of the game than the scoreline would have suggested and they did managed to find a consolation goal through LEE TOMLIN to at least give the large away following something to cheer about. The goal came after some good attacking play from Posh and an inch perfect through ball from McCann provided Tomlin with a chance to outpace Baird before calmly slotting the ball beyond Stockdale. The composure shown by the former Rushden man is encouraging, especially as this is arguably the biggest stage that he has been able to exhibit his skills on in his relatively short career to date.Tomlin had grabbed the ball out of the goal and it suggested that, although most fans had given up hope even if you wouldnt have gue sed from the noise levels, the Posh players were not about tostop tryingjust yet. Johnson threw on Kieran Agard in central midfield, a position that the youngster is unaccustomed to, to replace Adam Clayton who had impre sed. This substitution meant that Posh had five particularly attack minded players on the pitch at the same time.As a result of this Posh were almost completely disregarding their defensive duties and Fulham looked dangerous every time they attacked it seemed inevitable that the hosts would score again. And they did. The fifth Fulham goal came from DIOMANSY KAMARA, who completed his hat-trick by slotting the ball beyond Lewis after more suspect defending from the League One outfit. It was now a question of remaining profe sional for Fulham and Posh were starting to play with freedom, knowing the game was over as a contest. Lee Tomlin was particularly impre sive skinning John Pantsil, a full-back who played regularly at the World Cup in the summer, on numerous occasions. Loan signing Jonathan Obika had a great chance to grab a debut goal from himself after finding space in the area but his shot was tame and easy for Stockdale to save. The visitors did manage to reduce the deficit once more though when Craig Mackail-Smith was brought down by substitute defender Rafik Halliche, who had replaced the impre sive Brede Hangeland only moments before. Obika wanted to take the spot kick and was visibly disappointed when captain McCann decided that he should take it. GRANT McCANN was cool from the spot though, sending Stockdale the wrong way, and confirming his position as Poshs first choice penalty kick taker. It was the hosts who would score the last goal of a free-scoring second half though and restore their four goal advantage through JONATHON GREENING. Again Mark Littles marking was suspect and a half-hearted attempt at a tackle wasnt good enough to stop Greening from tucking the ball past Lewis, via a deflection and completing the scoring. The goal capped off an impre sive cameo appearance from the midfielder who had provided two a sists and scored a goal in his brief period on the pitch. On the whole it was an encouraging performance from Posh, especially going forward. The team seemed more creative as a unit and could have had more than the two goals that they did score had they of been more clinical anyhow to score two goals away to Premier League side is a fairly impre sive achievement in itself. However, defensively we were shown up once more. Of course, some excuses can be made that Fulham are a higher quality opponent that than the ones that we might face in League One action but the fundamentals were still being done incorrectly. Johnson is looking to bring in new defensive additions and it seems imperative that a new right back, centre back and left back are brought in if we are to have any chance of limiting the goals that we concede at the moment.A special mention must go to Lee Tomlin who was outstanding throughout and seemed to fit in at this level. His quality is second to none and he must have caught the attention of Mark Hughes as he caused the Fulham defence a torrid time. It will not be long until the offers begin to flood in for Tomlin and he will make the club a lot of money when he does leave for bigger things. Honestly, he looks set to go right to the top. The player oozes cla s and quality and it is no surprise that Rushden fans were so disappointed when he left; he has settled in at this level with consummate ease and, at the age of only 21, has time to develop further. If we continue to play like this going forward against League One sides we will have no problems in scoring plenty of goals not that we have had a problem in doing so already this season. But it was encouraging to see the squad looking to play some football rather the smashing the ball long, something that the team have had a tendency to do in recent weaks. Fulham were profe sional and had a lot of cla s that we cant compete with but this wont be found at our regular level, therefore the performance had many encouraging signs. One thing that must also be commended is the Posh support. Every single one of the fans that made the trip to London were terrific today and got behind the team right until the final whistle. Lets make sure its like this every match from now on and hopefully some of the le s regular fans will be encouraged to come to some more games at London Road after that entertaining match Ryan Braun Jersey .Anyway, onto Brentford on Tuesday night now and here is hoping for three points its a very big game.Up The Posh.
